Florida may not be super well known as a surfing destination, in comparison to other places like Hawaii, Southern California, or even Australia, but there are still some seriously impressive breaks to check out. But with so many famous surfers hailing from Florida (we’re talking about you, Kelly Slater), it should come as no surprise that Florida is chop full of impressive surf locations. If you are going to hit up these spots, regardless of expectations and skill level, you will need the right gear to start your journey. #1- Cocoa Beach
Just east of Orlando lies Cocoa Beach, the birthplace of the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop and 11-time World Surf League #1 Pro, Kelly Slater. Though not an ideal spot for experienced surfers looking for a challenge, Cocoa Beach Pier is a good place for beginners to set up. Southeast wind chops during high tide are going to give you the longest rides along this stretch.
#2- South Beach
What’s not to love about South Beach? From the exquisite cuisine, culture, and maybe more unconventional, its accommodations for surfers during the months of July-November. There is a jetty at First Street that you will want to check when it’s low or mid-tide on north to northeast swells. #3- New Smyrna Beach Inlet
Some of the most consistent waves can also be found at New Smyrna Beach, otherwise known as NSB or the “wave magnet”, from locals. With 13 miles of beach, you have plenty of room to stretch out and find the perfect swell. The spot is a great area for trick riding and is home to many pioneers of the sport. These include Ross Pell, Isabel McLaughlin, Charley Baldwin, and Kem McNair, to name a few. If you are looking for more information on the surfing history of this inlet, check out the New Smyrna Museum of History, where there is an exhibit dedicated to the area’s favorite pastime. The surf at the beach is the best when the swell is heading southeast, just be cognizant of jellyfish, sharks, and rips.
#4- Ponce Inlet
Right between New Smyrna and Daytona is Ponce Inlet, home to professional surfer, Cobie Gittner. The jetty coming north from New Smyrna Beach creates sandbars at the south end. One of the outer sandbars known as the Shark Shallows, gives you good waves in virtually any swell condition. Assuming of course, you are brave enough to paddle out to this. Higher tides are going to give you bigger waves at these outside bars.
#5- Jacksonville
Jacksonville is a great spot for surfers, and for good reason. Hanna Park is ideal for some good breaks, clean showers, and even has some spots for camping. A few other noteworthy areas include the Officer’s Club and Lighthouse, but Mayport Poles is the spot for surfing on a northeast swell. Similarly, the south side of the Jacksonville Beach Pier will give you some long lefts and short rights on a north or northeast swell. However, if you head to the north side, you will find consistent waves during the peak of high tide.
