Domestic Surf Spots That You Can Check Out

A huge part of the surf lifestyle is being able to travel, so if you were a surfer prior to the recent pandemic, then chances are you’ve been itching to hit the waves once again. The main reason why surfers travel is to find bigger and better waves, but that isn’t the only reason, with many also enjoying meeting new people. If you’re one of these people, then chances are you’re already planning your travels for next year.

Whether you prefer flying, or you’re into road trips and have a van ready and waiting, domestic travel in America has always been relatively easy. Although the current pandemic restrictions have made it more difficult, and many surfers are feeling somewhat dismayed at the loss of not one but two seasons. As vaccination rates soar, and the end of the pandemic finally seems to be in sight, it’s high time we started considering where to travel to surf, come 2022.

Here is a look at some domestic surf spots near me that’ll be worth the miles next Summer.

Surf Spots in Hawaii

A total no-brainer for most surfers, Hawaii represents the birth of surfing for most of us, as it’s the closest Polynesian island to the United States. If you’ve never been before, then now is the time to go, as developments haven’t fully enveloped all of the beaches just yet.

Cost

Travel to Hawaii tends to be on the expensive side, as one can only get there by plane from the mainland. Budget Your Trip estimates around $274 a day for a trip to Hawaii, not including a partner, so be sure to plan your trip around the weather. Thankfully, once you’re on one of the islands there are affordable accommodation options if you don’t mind bunking with others.

Best Time of Year

Unless you don’t mind bumping into hundreds of other surfers, we believe the best time of year to visit is during the Summer months: between May and October. Otherwise if you’re looking for the gnarliest waves, the Winter season on the northern beaches won’t disappoint.

Surf Spots in Jupiter Florida

Jupiter in Florida is a tried-and true place for surfers and skaters alike. Offering a decent range of beaches both north and south, with a small town full of locally-owned shops, including a couple skate and surf shops, Jupiter Florida has been and always will be worth the visit.

Cost

Unlike Hawaii, Jupiter Florida is accessible by road, and the trip would take you past plenty of other beaches which may be worth checking out. If you bring your own van, then staying in Jupiter can cost you next to nothing. Otherwise there are affordable hotels around if you book in advance.

Best Time of Year

The best time of year for consistent clean waves in Jupiter Florida is Autumn, which still boasts temperatures in the high 80s This also makes for great weather to check out some of the skate parks around and to tear up the streets between hitting the waves.

Surf Spots in Huntington Beach

“We’re going going, back back, to Cali Cali” spoke the timeless Biggie Smalls, and he sure was right. California is one of those places you can’t only visit once in your life, with many people finding themselves drawn back in time and time again. Of all the surf beaches across the United States, Huntington Beach has to be one of the most well-known, and for plenty of good reasons. Not only does it boast a lifestyle which is all too familiar to most surfers, it offers some of the best waves on the West Coast.

Cost

As with travelling to surf in Jupiter Florida, regardless of where you are in the States it’s going to be pretty affordable to get to Cali. Whether you drive across the country in a van, or jet across on one of the domestic airlines, travel to Cali is relatively affordable. Once you are there though, the cost of things like accommodation and food may be more comparable to Hawaii than Jupiter.

Best Time of Year

The best time to go surfing at Huntington Beach is Winter, as it offers the most consistent waves. Sadly, this isn’t the best weather for holidaying though, so be sure to bring plenty to do between catching waves. On the other hand, as it is the low season for their tourism, some of the pricier accommodations may charge a lot less.

Whether you fly to Hawaii, or drive to Jupiter Florida, be sure to catch the waves, meet the locals, and spend it up at your local surf shops.
